DESCRIPTION:
Espy Curtis & Co, Chicago, Illinois, "Curtis Egg Timer" cooking device, two spring driven timers with verge and foliot escapements, copper water vessel, two movement stands, and two egg cooking pans to accommodate six eggs total.
CONDITION:
The unit is in very original condition. The movements both show signs of life, but probably need some cleaning and oiling. Nice raised lettering on the movement cases showing instructions and the company name. The hooks at the top of the posts are pulled up to the specified number, which indicates minutes. The eggs were placed in the pans and then lowered to the full length of the attached chains into the tub of boiling water. This set the timers -- complete with egg-shaped regulating weights at the end of the foliot arms -- into motion. At the end of the specified time, the chains suddenly pull the pans from the water to stop the eggs from cooking any longer. These were reportedly used in hotel rooms in conjunction with a hot plate.
